How To Use Bronzer & Blush

image

BEAUTY | THE SETUP » By Jennie Wong

Makeup artists love a defined cheekbone — it’s classic, photogenic, and slimming. But how do we achieve it?

For that toned, defined look, you’ll need a highlighting color, blush, and bronzer.

I have this mineral powder trio from Nuance by Salma Hayek in Spice, but you don’t have to use this one.

The brush: You want to use a flat synthetic brush with loose bristles because the key here is definition but natural. You want it to look like your face is naturally blessed, toned and contoured. The flatness of the brush will give you control and precision, while the loose bristles will allow the product to disperse evenly and lightly.

Step 1. Take a bit of your highlighting color (in my compact, the lightest color) onto the flat edge of your brush and dust that just above your cheekbones. This brings the attention up and gives the illusion of ‘lifting’ your cheekbones.

Step 2. Use the middle portion of the brush (the fluffiest part) to pick up your blush color. For me, my blush is the middle brown in this compact. It’s like a rust brown. Basically, you want to find a color that adds warmth (red or pink tones) to your face. This color adds reds; if you want pink tones, try Benefit Fine One One or Benefit Bella Bamba. Sweep the blush across the apple of your cheek in an upward or circular motion. This is what makes your cheeks *pop*.

Step 3. Flip your brush and use the other flat side to pick up your bronzer. In my compact, that’s the darkest color. Take the color and carefully draw it just under your cheekbone. I like to buff downward so that the color is most concentrated under the high point of the cheekbone. Buff and blend well. Applying bronzer creates the illusion of hollowed out cheeks and a sculpted, elongated face.

Using the rest of the product on my brush, I like to add some shadowing at the top of my forehead (close to my hairline and temples) and under my jawbone. This further defines the face and creates the shape that you want.
